Several Champions met to talk about individual issues related to implementing RTIC, including turnover, burnout, and limited staff capacity.

The RTIC Support Team met and discussed taking a break from Champion events and meeting with organizations individually to help set up plans for taking the next steps in this challenging environment.

To set up an organization visit, click here to leave a note, and the Support Team will reach out soon.

Champion events will resume in 2023 after some organizations are working on their plans.

AUGUST 2022 - CHAMPION DEVELOPMENT

We heard from the Great Rivers HUB about how they make their work more trauma-informed by having their Community Health Workers collect ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) data from the clients they work with.

Great Rivers HUB Adult ACEs Screening Protocol

We also talked about next steps for getting the message about resilience and trauma-informed care out into the community. Instead of a full Foundation training, our champions discussed options for hosting viewing sessions for the film Resilience: The Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope. Our RTIC team has several DVDs with educational screening licenses, and the film is available for purchase for individual viewing (not screening) on Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu.

We reviewed a draft of a facilitator's guide and toolkit, which we will add to our website as it gets developed. We will continue development of this guide based on the feedback we received. If you'd like to share your thoughts, contact us here.

May 2022 - Champion Development

For In our first hybrid gathering, we continued our work learning about Dr. Bruce Perry's Neurosequential Model, specifically looking at the Sequence of Engagement (Regulate-Relate-Reason). Curt Teff talked about the importance of acknowledging the stories we tell ourselves internally and how those stories affect our interactions with others. We watched Dr. Perry's video on the Sequence of Engagement and then watched a news story from Boston that showed an example of how interactions can become confrontations if we don't enter into them feeling regulated.

For July's Community of Practice:
  • Watch for opportunities for when things get out of alignment and think about why they got that way.
  • Ask yourself: what stories do you tell yourself during the most difficult situations you face with the people you serve?

APril 2022 - Community of Practice

4/29/2022

We heard how some of our Champions are using different resources to build skills with their staff and the people they serve:
Bruce Perry's Neurosequential Model training
Compassion Resilience Toolkits

We also toured the newly-reworked RTIC website and explored its many resources. Thanks and best wishes to our student preceptee Corianne for all her work getting this up and running!

February 2022 - Champion Development

2/18/2022

At the last Community of Practice, we heard from many of our Champions about challenges they were facing with overwhelm on their teams, dealing with staff turnover, and maintain momentum as the pandemic continues.  We dedicated our Champion Development session to our Champions and what they can do to build their own resilience and that of their teams.

We talked about a resource from Dr. Bruce Perry from the Neurosequential Network and heard about how the La Crosse School District will be using these resources with their staff to address burnout.

January 2022 - Community Of Practice

1/14/2022

At our January 2022 Community of Practice, we talked in sector groups about what our Champions' organizations needed to implement RTIC principles in their work. We also heard about the challenges many of our sectors face, including staff turnover and the continuous need to onboard, the difficulty of seeing RTIC as integral--rather than in addition to--everyday work, and general overwhelm as we face the current stage of the pandemic and its impacts on the populations served.

There was interest in learning "microskills” to operationalize RTIC principles, develop language for keeping leaders engaged, and supporting staff. Overall, many of our Champions are continuously putting out fires, making momentum difficult to maintain. As a result, our next Champion Development session will focus on these needs.
